First Detachment
There is a point in every trainee’s journey when training gets challenging. This happens when the enteric nervous system requires that the gut undergo a die-off of bacteria so that neurotransmitter expression may improve. This process occurs as a direct result of rebuilding the fascial web. I refer to this as First Detachment. First Detachment is a biomechanically driven alteration of body chemistry that creates both neurological and psychological responses.
During First Detachment we experience pain. Primal Rotational Patterns training progressively strips old injuries of their scar tissue. New range of motion is expressed across the involved joint(s), as well as across the fascial web at large. There is weakness at this moment because new tissue is being used for the first time, and ranges of motion that may not have been expressed for years or longer are being re-expressed. We feel raw. We need time to express this new range so that we can regain function.
This is inconvenient and fatiguing. It is inevitable that each of us confront the unfairness of the situation with irritation, anger, even rage. This is normal. Our society has preached entitlement and convenience to the verge of our own self destruction. This is wrong-headed. We are not entitled to convenience. Life is not convenient. Life is.
This moment is when the trainee makes a decision to quit, or makes a decision to let go of their ego. This is a major death-event in the small intestine, and identifies this person as someone to watch if they are able to navigate their emotional life and continue to move forward.
You are not special. You are challenged to live, and this guarantees that you fail and that you grapple with inevitable self-pity. This is the first bastion of the ego. Embrace these experiences as valuable, double-down on your commitment, and you will become ego’s master.
When you do this, you will ALL be special.
