Essential Fatty Acids: ALA, EPA, and DHA
Biomega-3 Liquid provides a high-quality source of essential fatty acids. In the cornucopia, essential fatty acids are found in the form of ALA – alpha linoleic acid – in fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, fish, and organ meat.
ALA is converted in the liver to EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexanaenoic acid). Humans do not convert ALA efficiently, particularly when they are metabolically challenged, so individual supplementation is critical in the Primal Rotational Patterns system. A 3:2 ratio of EPA to DHA is the ratio of essential fatty acid makeup provided in nature by cold water oily fish such as salmon, mackeral, and steelhead / rainbow trout. Biomega-3 Liquid provides this exact ratio.
Essential fatty acids improve lipid (fat) metabolism, provide anti-inflammatory effects that result in the reduction of pain, particularly in the joints. This makes movement less stressful. They also exhibit marked ability to improve cognitive function and mood. As an adjunct to heart and brain health, they are anti-arrhythmic (prevent heart arrhythmia), and anti-thrombotic (prevent blood clots).¹
They improve endothelial function – the function of the lining of your blood vessels – by enhancing fatty acid oxidation, reducing synthesis of very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDLs), and lowering triglyceride levels. In other words, they improve cholesterol profile, thereby lowering the incidence of statin-drug prescription.
Concerns with Fatty Acid Supplementation
With essential fatty acids, there are two major considerations:
- purity of the product, due to contamination of our seas with heavy metals, microplastics, and other industrial waste;
- a liquid, rather than gel capsule product, with the best ratio of EPA to DHA for gut healing.
Biomega-3 Liquid essential fatty acids are sourced from wild-caught anchovies in the far South Pacific Ocean off the coast of Chile. This location guarantees the freshest raw material currently available. Batches are tracked by ORIVO, a world leader in third-party verification of quality. This process ensures that what was caught was a pure single species, and that its’ nutrients made it into the bottle intact.
For gut health, the ideal ratios of essential fatty acids should be EPA to DHA of 1.5:1. This has everything to do with prioretizing lowering inflammation. Biomega-3 Liquid™ is almost perfect in this regard, with a ratio of EPA to DHA of 1.45:1. The supplement is in liquid form liquid to give your body nothing additional to digest in the way of gelatin capsules.
