Strength Equipment and Incrementation Standards

Every piece of equipment in Primal Rotational Patterns is designed to provide a unique and repeatable set of loading characteristics across the entire human population. Tolerances – where they exist – are listed in the page below to educate potential Primal Rotational Patterns service providers and customers where shortfalls may exist in their current gym layouts.

Dumbbells

Dumbbells are standardized with a grip diameter of 1 3/8 inches. Our dumbbells are specially designed to keep bell size in balance with movement requirements at every level of the program.

Non-rotating handles are used – counter to the current trend in high-level sports facilities – specifically so that trainees develop the full potential of the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder as a high performance kinetic unit.

Chin-up & Pull-up Bars

Chin-Up and Pull-Up bars are standardized at 1 3/8″. Tolerance limits for the thickness of these bars is 1 5/16″ to 1 7/16″.

Barbells

We use Eleiko hybrid barbells for our primary heavy training bars. We use the 15-lbs York Barbell'”Ultra Lite” Aluminum Weight Bar for our light bars.

Customized Equipment

Several exercises use customized equipment to create unique loadable ranges of motion: lower leg, ankle and foot training is conducted on rounded footplates with 8-inch diameter arc length. Posterior chain strengthening uses a customized Poor Man’s Glute Ham Raise machine of my own design.

Other pieces of equipment common to commercial gym facilities are repurposed: traditional 45-degree back extension / hip extension units are used to train the torso in side-bending because of the unique range of motion they allow.

Incrementation of Primal One

Incrementation is taken to the highest standards and beyond. Dumbbells are graduated by .625-pound increments. Barbells graduate in .5-lbs increments.

Cervical spine training is progressed in .10-lbs, as opposed to using more standard incrementation or bungie cords, which behave too erratically for repeatably accurate and clinically effective loading.
